History
Major Levi Peirce, the founder of Central Baptist Church was born in 1733. His father, Captain Job Peirce was a man of deep and abiding faith in God. He led his family in daily devotions. By example and teachings, he instilled the same devotion to his Maker into the lives of his large family. This belief in God and His holy Word was the firm foundation upon which this church was founded over one hundred and seventy five years ago. Because of success in ship building, the West Indian trade, and their store in Assonet Village, the father and son decided to fulfill their desire to establish and build a church in what was becoming the center of Middleborough.
Central Baptist was organized on August 13, 1828. The first of three buildings was erected later that year.
The first Baptist church in Middleborough was organized in 1756. Central Baptist is the fifth Baptist church that was started. On January 28, 1888, the beautiful colonial building was destroyed by fire. Two years to the day, on January 22, 1890, the second building was dedicated, built at a cost of $24,000!
Because of the wear and tear of time, this second building was torn down. Our current building was dedicated in June of 1964. The church was completed at an approximate cost of $241,000.
Central Baptist Church has had twenty-two pastors in its history. The current pastor, the Rev. Dr. Roger D. Haber, began his ministry in May of 2002. Building on the foundation of those who have gone before, we look forward to what God will do in the years he gives us to continue this ministry that began generations ago.
